Questions We Get Asked in Stanmore
Is old rubber or cotton-covered wiring actually dangerous?
It can be. VIR and cotton-braided cable were standard decades ago, but the insulation dries out and cracks with age, sometimes leaving bare conductors exposed. We’re used to finding it in Stanmore’s older terraces and can trace it, assess the risk, and rewire the affected circuits without pulling the whole house apart unnecessarily.
My switchboard still has ceramic fuses — is that a problem?
Generally, yes. Rewireable ceramic fuses don’t offer the same protection as a modern circuit breaker, and there’s usually no safety switch fitted alongside them. We can swap the whole board over to breakers and RCDs so faults get cut off fast instead of turning into something worse.
Can you add more circuits to my existing switchboard?
Yes — for a new appliance, a renovation, an EV charger, whatever’s driving the extra demand. We check the board’s capacity first so any new circuits are added safely rather than just squeezed in.
Do you handle underground electrical connections?
